After twenty years of contentedly playing the role of home-maker and mother, Frances Copeland’s life is shattered by the sudden and premature death of her husband. Aged forty-three, with two almost grown-up children, the solitude of bereavement hits her particularly hard, forcing a reassessment both of her own desires and the perhaps too-easy, dependent shape her life has taken. When a new future beckons in the arms of a man seventeen years her junior, Frances finds her own reservations about pursuing such a love affair reflected in the judgemental attitudes of those nearest to her. Torn apart by the predicament, she fails to observe the crises evolving in the lives of her children – until a tragic accident brings her to her senses.
